The International Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to assess the English language skills of the candidates who need to study or gain international work experience ,where English is the primary language for communication. IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL, British council and IDP: IELTS Australia. There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. Academic Examination is taken by those students who opt for foreign education or student VISA, while General Examination is taken by those who opt for immigration or hoping to work abroad.
The examination is conducted in 2 separate sessions. The first day tests the student’s listening, reading and writing skills, which can go for 3 hours, with each module having a fixed timeline. The second session is held within the next 7 days which tests the student’s speaking abilities which can take up to 30 minutes.. Every year 48 test dates are available and the students can pick the most suitable date for them based on their preparation. Each of the 4 modules is scored separately out of a maximum score of 9. The score denotes the proficiency level of the individual and is averaged out to give a cumulative IELTS band score.
Module 1: A conversation between 2 people set in everyday social context.
Module 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context.
Module 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context.
Module 4: A monologue on an academic subject.

The IELTS writing test module varies depending on whether you are doing the Academic Test (for university applications) or the General Test (usually for work / general migration). The Writing section of IELTS Academic exam includes 2 tasks. Topics are of general interest and can range among varied topics. It is designed to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well you write a response appropriately, organize ideas and use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately. In IELTS Academic you have to describe a graph or diagram (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2). In IELTS General Training you have to write a letter (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2). Each task is assessed independently. The assessment of Task 2 carries more weight in marking than Task 1. Scores are reported in whole and half bands
Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself, your family, interests, studies, work etc.
Part 2: You will be given a card which asks you to speak on a given topic. You will have 1 minute to prepare before speaking.
Part 3: The examiner will ask you questions related to the topic given to you in part 2, giving you the opportunity to discuss the issues and ideas connected to the topic.
