Listening: 30 minutes

Module 1: A conversation between 2 people set in everyday social context.

Module 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context.

Module 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context.

Module 4: A monologue on an academic subject.

Reading: 60 minutes

This section consists of 3 to 4 reading passages of increasing difficulty, and there are a total of 40 questions to answer. The list of questions include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, recognizing writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose.

Writing: 60 minutes

The IELTS writing test module varies depending on whether you are doing the Academic Test (for university applications) or the General Test (usually for work / general migration). The Writing section of IELTS Academic exam includes 2 tasks. Topics are of general interest and can range among varied topics. It is designed to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well you write a response appropriately, organize ideas and use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately. In IELTS Academic you have to describe a graph or diagram (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2). In IELTS General Training you have to write a letter (Task 1) and write an essay (Task 2). Each task is assessed independently. The assessment of Task 2 carries more weight in marking than Task 1. Scores are reported in whole and half bands

Speaking: 11-14 minutes

Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself, your family, interests, studies, work etc.

Part 2: You will be given a card which asks you to speak on a given topic. You will have 1 minute to prepare               before speaking.

Part 3: The examiner will ask you questions related to the topic given to you in part 2, giving you the               opportunity to discuss the issues and ideas connected to the topic.
